Name for this worship gathering [May. 21st, 2004|09:54 pm]
[mood | curious]

Anyone have any ideas for a name for this wosrhip gathering? Images or ideas I have been thinking about have been dealing with bread of life, gathering, anything with water and refreshing, community, Worship, any nuances to postmodern, maybe a blending of two words or something from hebrew or greek texts, any ideas?

PLEASE let me know of any ideas you have.

New Worship Gathering [May. 21st, 2004|09:37 pm]
[mood | chipper]
[music |Live - Lightning Crashes]

One of the things i have been praying about and want to happen at the church is a once a month postmodern worship gathering on Sunday nights for Youth, College Age, Parents, Children--Anyone who wanted to join us. By Postmodern I mean;
1. Experiential (looking at passages in the Bible and incorporating senses (for instance the first one will be on where Jesus tells others that he is the Bread of Life. On that day I see a bread maker going on during the service so that by communion time we will use that bread. When you first walk in you would be greeted by a table full of a vriety of breads from which you can take some to eat when you arrive. There would be poems an songs of bread on the table and on the video screen. After the message there would be a time for people to walk to different stations to pray or listen to songs about bread or to taste different types of bread and contemplate how bread can feed us. The Songs would be worshipful with candles lighted everywhere)
2. Offerings would be mission oriented (collection for Metro or San Diego Rescue Mission)
3. More involvement from everyone from reading scripture to artwork
4. Art would be a part of the service with an area for drawing during the gathering
5. Focused on ways to bring the unchurched to the gathering.
6. A Spiritual Mystical feel to the service
7. use of the ancient symbols of christianity.

If anyone would like to be part of this please let me know!

Life in Dallas [May. 21st, 2004|09:18 pm]
[mood | content]
[music |Beatles - Blackbird]

It's 9:15 Friday night in Dallas. I have been here all week for a class on Youth Ministry and the Bible. I am proud of myself for the fact that I turned in my first paper and it isn't even due till Monday. So why all of my classmates are studying and writing this weekend I getta have fun :-)
Tommorow I am planning on golfing in the morning then going to a Texas rangers game in the afternoon. They will be playing the New York Yankees.
Reflections on Dallas
1. Everybody seems to love shopping (I heard there were more shopping malls per capita) here than anywhere else.
2. Everyone loves to eat out as well (same thing as shopping malls per capita)
3. There seems to be a lot of obsession with image here (I live in SD so who I am to talk)
4. A sign I read on a regular business office door yesterday (No Guns Allowed)
5. SMU is an incredible campus
6. The Hotel is very nice with full breakfast (omelettes too!!!) and free internet
7. Not as many cowboys here as I was expecting :-)
8. The people in class are very nice.
9. The Church Culture here is quiet different)
a. The teams have no games on Sundays or Wednesdays because of church activities
b. It is the Bible Belt so tehologically more conservative
c. There are 40-50 fulltime youth pastors at least in Dallas area--we have two in
San Diego
d. Lesson and ideas that work here would not in SD and vice versa
e. The kids here have different lifestyles (hard to explain)

The Man in Black [May. 9th, 2004|10:02 pm]
[mood | contemplative]
[music |Man in Black]

If you get a chance listen to this song. I know his type of music may not appeal to everyone but he is an incredible song writer.

THE MAN IN BLACK - JOHNNY CASH
Well, you wonder why I always dress in black,
Why you never see bright colors on my back,
And why does my appearance seem to have a somber tone.
Well, there's a reason for the things that I have on.

I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down,
Livin' in the hopeless, hungry side of town,
I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime,
But is there because he's a victim of the times.

I wear the black for those who never read,
Or listened to the words that Jesus said,
About the road to happiness through love and charity,
Why, you'd think He's talking straight to you and me.

Well, we're doin' mighty fine, I do suppose,
In our streak of lightnin' cars and fancy clothes,
But just so we're reminded of the ones who are held back,
Up front there ought 'a be a Man In Black.

I wear it for the sick and lonely old,
For the reckless ones whose bad trip left them cold,
I wear the black in mournin' for the lives that could have been,
Each week we lose a hundred fine young men.

And, I wear it for the thousands who have died,
Believen' that the Lord was on their side,
I wear it for another hundred thousand who have died,
Believen' that we all were on their side.

Well, there's things that never will be right I know,
And things need changin' everywhere you go,
But 'til we start to make a move to make a few things right,
You'll never see me wear a suit of white.

Ah, I'd love to wear a rainbow every day,
And tell the world that everything's OK,
But I'll try to carry off a little darkness on my back,
'Till things are brighter, I'm the Man In Black

The other day I was at Borders looking through an anthology book on him and his lyrics impress me. Any thoughts on him?

Nostalgia [Apr. 30th, 2004|08:36 pm]
I just got back from spending staying my last few days at the house I grew up in. Many memories from there--
1. Sliding down rollers from the roof of the warehouse in back (giving our mom a heart attack :-)
2. Catching a rattle snake (unaware that it was until I was holding it )
3. Throwing a party with over a hundred people at ( I had to call the cops on my own party to get people to leave)
4. Taking forever for my folks to trust me and leave me alone for the weekend again :-)
5. Breaking furniture while wrestling around.
6. Going out ATV riding in the desert across the street (where there are now houses grrrr.
7. Going horseback riding (or at least getting thrown off a horse numerous times by a cruel neighbor--she later said it was her own way of flirting
8. Getting caught shooting a gun across the street(Trying to stuff the gun into the dirt right in front of the cop)
9. Watching(and trying to stop) my idiot neighbor burn down 5 acres across the street while trying to launch a rocket made out of a Paper towel holder, bicycle grease, and gasoline
10. Looking out the front door to see an ostrich running by
11. Having friends stay over till all hours of the night in our game room (which was on the other side of the house of my folks room)
12. Playing commando games with Bottle Rockets
13. Making the mistake of going bareback horse back riding (you'll be fine---right)
14. Dumping my sister right in the middle of a puddle while doing a wheelie on an ATV
15. Building an ATV and Motorcycle track in the backyard
16. doing a wheelie over a mile on an ATC
17. Jumping over a jump and up into a tree on my motorcycle
18. Raising chickens, pigeons, rabbits, and ducks
19. The dog I grew up with ---Goober was her name. (Yes I named her :-)
20. Playing Basketball for hourse each night out in the front yard.

Randy
PS maybe I will do a part two if this is not too boring.

"Saved" The Movie [Apr. 14th, 2004|07:51 pm]
Today I was watching and checking out the webiste for the movie "Saved" Here is a link to the Windows Media Player Preview (hopefully)
http://mfile.akamai.com/28/asf/mgm.download.akamai.com/28/Theatrical/SAVED_t_300K.asx

The movie looks quite funny. I went to a christian high school and I can relate to the carictures. One of the strongest tendencies in christian high schools is toward legalism and being judgemental. and I was amused at the message boards on this movie--It is either a love hate response. I guess some people cannot handle either critique or satire.
